L'école RÉSCOM constitue un des principaux outils de formation et d'animation scientifique de haut niveau promu par le pôle RESCOM du groupe de recherche Architectures Systèmes et Réseaux du CNRS. Cette école de recherche qui connait un succès jamais démenti depuis 15 ans vise la formation par la recherche et la promotion des recherches sur les réseaux de communication. Son but est donc d'établir un lieu privilégié pour la transmission, à un niveau national, voire européen, de l'état de l'art et des grandes avancées de la recherche sur les réseaux de communication.

Le thème scientifique développé dans le cadre de l’édition 2010 de l’école RÉSCOM s’inscrit dans l’évolution des réseaux de communications sans fil qui sont désormais omniprésents dans notre vie quotidienne et qui offrent de nombreuses perspectives dans de multiples domaines liés à la sécurité des personnes en particulier dans les systèmes de transports de nouvelle génération.

L'édition 2010 de l'école de recherche ResCom, consacrée aux communications dans les systèmes de transport intelligents (thème riche d’enjeux économiques, sociétaux et industriels) s'inscrit dans une logique d'animation et de promotion de l'excellence scientifique en proposant un point de haut niveau sur l'état de l'art des verrous scientifiques et technologiques ainsi qu’un tour d’horizon des solutions proposées.

C’est ainsi que les problématiques suivantes seront proposées :

. Les réseaux ad-hoc véhiculaires ;

· . Les réseaux de capteurs véhiculaires ;

· . L’intégration fixe/mobile ;

· . L’évaluation des performances : modèles de mobilité, la simulation et les tests ;

· . Les problèmes de localisation ;

· . Les standards et leurs impacts sur le monde de la recherche dans ce domaine ;

· . Les systèmes de communications pour les autres types de transports

L'édition 2010 proposera un ensemble de tutoriaux et d'exposés techniques réalisés par des intervenant faisant autorité tant par leur expertise scientifique reconnue internationalement que par leur compétence pédagogique. Ce cycle de tutoriaux et d'exposés sera complété par une session dans laquelle chaque chercheur sénior présentera brièvement sa vision prospective de recherche ainsi que par deux sessions posters consacrées aux travaux de tous les jeunes chercheurs participant à l'édition 2010.

Introducing the 2010 Mobile Enterprise and Technology Expo (METE)

This year, we will be adding the inaugural 2010 Mobile Enterprise and
Technology Expo (METE) as a venue that gathers all industrial creators,
publishers, and distributors of mobile operating systems, mobile
software development kits and mobile (enterprise) applications. METE
will enable such parties to show-case their state-of-the-art as well as
upcoming products and developments in demo style displays. Alongside the
demos, there will be an exhibition area for commercial exhibitors to
expand their network of clients and foster relationships with existing
customers. We envision METE as the industrial component that complements
the academic part of Mobility 2010 with the main goal of forging links
between academics and the industry. Participants of either component of
Mobility 2010 may cross over to the other conference/exhibition to
listen to the various talks, presentations and demos. Through this
interaction, we sincerely hope that industry participants can have a
common platform to work with their academic counterparts.

This international workshop on complex networks (CompleNET 2010)
aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners
working on areas related to complex networks. In the past two
decades we have been witnessing an exponential increase on the
number of publications in this field. From biological systems to
computer science, from economic to social systems, complex
networks are becoming pervasive in many fields of science. It is
this interdisciplinary nature of complex networks that this
workshop aims at addressing.

Authors are encouraged to submit previously unpublished papers on
their research in complex networks. Both theoretical and applied
papers are of interest. Specific topics of interest are (but not

post-proceedings to be published by Springer-Verlag as volume of the
series of Studies in Computational Intelligence.
Authors of abstracts presented at the workshop will be invited to submit
a full paper, possibly incorporating the results of the workshop
discussion.
These will be reviewed according to the refereeing
procedures, and accepted papers will be published in the workshop
post-proceedings.

Submit your paper/abstract electronically in PDF format. Neither
hardcopy nor fax submissions will be accepted. Submissions should be
printable on a standard printer on common paper formats such as A4 or
letter. Submitted papers/abstracts should follow the Springer format
(please visit website for more details). Abstracts length should not
exceed two A4 pages. Accepted full papers should not exceed 12 pages in
this format.

Some papers may be accepted as short papers and shall be limited to
8 pages maximum.

Wireless Network Measurements

Scope
The rise in wireless technologies for both local and wide-area networking,
such as ZigBee, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, 3G and LTE, means that the Internet is
increasingly wireless. To better understand the nature of these changes,
it is important to evaluate these technologies in real-world environments
via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches
are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the
wireless protocols and the varying and error-prone wireless channel.
As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless
network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking
research community.

This workshop continues the successful WiNMee series, begun at WiOpt in
2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of
experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing
advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements.
We solicit 6-page papers that advance the understanding of wireless
networks through testbed measurements or field experiments.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- operational experience of the performance of wireless networks
- challenges with wireless measurements
- experimental (in) validation of simulation or mobility models
and assumptions in a wireless environment
- metrics that would be required in a wireless network for
performance evaluation or wireless network troubleshooting
- experience from building/designing wireless networks
- descriptions of tools for building and/or managing wireless
testbeds (e.g. wireless link emulation)
- large-scale or federated testbed measurements
- techniques for improving the repeatability of tests,
simplifying experiment setup and reconfiguration
- techniques for validating the results obtained in the wireless testbed
- techniques for measuring heterogenous wireless networks
- techniques for collecting, archiving, anonymising and sharing
wireless measurement data
- new measurement hardware platforms, e.g., cognitive radio

SCOPE:

The 7th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor
Systems (IEEE MASS 2010) is to be held in San Francisco, CA between
October TBD, 2010. Wireless ad-hoc communication has applications in a
variety of environments, such as conferences, hospitals, battlefields
and disaster-recovery/rescue operations, and is also being actively
investigated as an alternative paradigm for Internet connectivity in
both urban and rural areas. Wireless sensor and actuator networks are
also being deployed for enhancing industrial control processes and
supply-chains, and for various forms of environmental monitoring. The
IEEE MASS 2010 aims at addressing advances in research on multi-hop
ad-hoc and sensor networks, covering topics ranging from technology

The study of of social networks originated in social and business
communities. In recent years, social network research has advanced
significantly; the development of sophisticated techniques for Social
Network Analysis and Mining (SNAM) has been highly influenced by the
online social Web sites, email logs, phone logs and instant messaging
systems, which are widely analyzed using graph theory and machine learning
techniques. People perceive the Web increasingly as a social medium that
fosters interaction among people, sharing of experiences and knowledge,
group activities, community formation and evolution. This has led to a
rising prominence of SNAM in academia, politics, homeland security and
business. This follows the pattern of known entities of our society that
have evolved into networks in which actors are increasingly dependent on
their structural embedding.

The international conference on Advances in Social Network Analysis and
Mining (ASONAM 2010) will primarily provide an interdisciplinary venue
that will bring together practitioners and researchers from a variety of
SNAM fields to promote collaborations and exchange of ideas and practices.
ASONAM 2010 is intended to address important aspects with a specific focus
on the emerging trends and industry needs associated with social
networking analysis and mining. The conference solicits experimental and
theoretical works on social network analysis and mining along with their
application to real life situations.

1. Papers and Notes

Ubicomp 2010 welcomes original, high-quality research contributions
that advance the state of the art in the design, development, deployment,
evaluation and understanding of ubiquitous computing systems and
their applications. Ubicomp 2010 will include a highly selective
single-track program of full papers and notes. Full Papers (10-page
submissions) and Notes (4-page submissions that are not works
in progress) are due at the same time and will be reviewed by the
same committee using the same review process to ensure a uniform
quality between Full Papers and Notes.

All papers (Full Papers and Notes) should clearly compare and contrast
how the work relates to previous research or experience, what aspects
of the work are new, and the major contributions it makes. They will be
evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of the contribution
to the field, quality of research, quality of writing, and technical
correctness. Submissions must not have been previously published or be
under simultaneous review for any other conference, journal, workshop or
other publication with an ISBN, ISSN, or DOI number.

Submissions must be in Adobe PDF format and conform to the guidelines
specified in the CfP. Papers should be formatted according to the
Ubicomp ACM Word or Latex template. Papers must include an abstract
of no more than 150 words. Paper submissions have to be anonymized to
facilitate double blind review. Authors should take care throughout
their paper that their own and their institution’s identity is not
revealed. However, relevant references to an author’s previous
research (which may be required for reviewers to understand and
evaluate the paper’s contribution) should not be suppressed but
instead referenced in a neutral way.

2. Workshops

Ubicomp 2010 invites proposals for one day workshops be held on Sunday,
September 26, prior to the main conference. The Workshops program will
provide a forum for attendees to discuss specialized topics or topics of
special interest.

This year, we would especially encourage more ambitious workshops of two
types. The first type is academic in nature and can be viewed as
mini-tracks to the main conference. These workshops should have the
potential to be sustainable and re-occur in the coming years. Hence, we
are looking to host workshops with the ambition of setting up a program
committee and aim for publication for improved versions of the workshop
papers.

The second type of workshops aims at building ubiquitous systems or
applications at the day of the workshop. Hence, this type of workshops is
a place for people to meet and design, build, or integrate ubiquitous
systems. This may range from physical design mock-ups containing no
technology, to a video prototype, to building an application on a
hardware toolkit provided by the organizers. Such a workshop should feed
directly into the other parts of the conference by producing a demo or a
video for the demo and video program .

3. Adjunct Program (Posters, Demos and Videos)

The Ubicomp 2010 adjunct program track provides researchers with
opportunities to present their cutting-edge work in an interactive
fashion in front of an expert audience. Posters allow you to inform
attendees about your work in person, demos allow you to showcase
tangible results and communicate ideas and concepts in a powerful
way, and videos allow you to visualize the results of your research
and development efforts.

Ubicomp 2010 newly combines these hitherto seperate tracks into an
integrated, multimodal submission process: Submit your work both as
a video and a demo; present a poster and show a video; or go for a
combination of all three! A multimodal submission not only gets more
“participant face-time”, but also increases its chances for acceptance:
if the submission gets accepted in at least one of the tracks, it is
implicitly accepted into the other tracks (subject to some basic
quality control, of course).

The basis of your Ubicomp 2010 adjunct program submission is a 2-page
abstract that describes the technology being presented and discusses
the novelty and distinguishing ideas or approaches that it brings to
the ubiquitous computing community. Even if you go multimodal, you
are required to submit one abstract only. Depending on what tracks
you are submitting to, you might need to provide supplemental material
such as a poster sketch, a demo description, and/or a video.

workshop "Data driven dynamical networks"

Dear Colleagues,

we are glad to announce the forthcominq workshop

"Data driven dynamical networks"

that will take place from September 26th to October 1st, 2010
in Les Houches, France.

The theme of the workshop revolves around the dynamics of complex
networks and the recent advances in that field. Its goal is to bring
together researchers at the forefront of this research activity across
disciplines, focusing on the recent developments which have made large
amounts of data available. The main topics of the workshop will be:

-real-time measure of social interactions
-caracterisation, analysis and modeling of dynamical networks
-dynamical processes on dynamical networks
-visualization of dynamical networks
-integration of online and offline social networks
-applications to epidemiology, social sciences, computer sciences

L’article 1 de la loi « Informatique et libertés » dispose que :
L'informatique doit être au service de chaque citoyen. Son développement
doit s'opérer dans le cadre de la coopération internationale. Elle ne
doit porter atteinte ni à l'identité humaine, ni aux droits de l'homme,
ni à la vie privée, ni aux libertés individuelles ou publiques. Il se
trouve cependant que certains développements des technologies de
l’information ou de leurs usages suscitent de légitimes préoccupations
de la part des citoyens, notamment pour ce qui concerne la protection de
leur vie privée et de leurs données personnelles. Même si les
informaticiens ne peuvent prétendre résoudre seuls des questions aussi
complexes, il leur revient de fournir des techniques et des outils
permettant une meilleure protection des droits des individus. Un certain
nombre de travaux de recherche ont déjà été effectués ou initiés dans
cette direction et d’autres sont en préparation. On parle notamment des
PET (Privacy Enhancing Technologies) ou encore du « privacy by design »
qui consiste à prendre en compte l’exigence de protection dès la phase
de conception d’un système. L’objectif de cet atelier est de regrouper
tous les acteurs concernés pour effectuer un état de l’art de la
recherche informatique française dans le domaine et préparer
d’éventuelles collaborations. L’atelier sera organisé en sessions de
travail dont les thèmes seront précisés en fonction des soumissions
reçues. La participation à l’atelier est conditionnée à une présentation
sur la base d’un court descriptif (de 4 à 6 pages, en français ou en
anglais) comportant un résumé des travaux effectués sur le sujet et une
présentation des projets futurs. Le critère essentiel d’acceptation des
soumissions sera leur pertinence par rapport aux thèmes de l’atelier.

Chaque année, les membres de l’axe d’étude Mobilité et Ubiquité du Groupe de Recherche I3 se rencontrent dans une manifestation durant plusieurs jours. En 2010, les journées ateliers UbiMob se tiendront à Lyon du 17 au 19 mai 2010, sous la forme d'ateliers sans actes publiés. Des actes informels seront distribués aux participants au cours de ces journées ateliers. Des discussions sont en cours pour éditer un numéro spécial de revue comportant des articles rédigés à partir d’une sélection de présentations faites à ces journées.

Ces journées ont comme objectif premier d’être un lieu d’échange scientifique et de rencontre sur le thème de l’informatique ubiquitaire et mobile entre acteurs académiques et industriels issus de différentes disciplines (e.g. systèmes distribués, capteurs, intergiciels, sécurité, bases de données, interaction homme-machine, ergonomie, sciences humaines et sociales) autour de travaux sur la conception, la mise en oeuvre et l'évaluation des systèmes informatiques mobiles et ubiquitaires.

Organisée à Lyon, UbiMob 2010 est la 6ème édition de ces rencontres après Lille (2009), Saint Malo (2008), Paris (2006), Grenoble (2005) et Nice (2004). Ces journées ont pour objectif d’offrir un cadre à l’échange. Ainsi, nous prendrons soin de laisser un temps de parole assez important à chaque orateur pour lui permettre de faire une présentation approfondie de ses travaux et d’initier une discussion.

Toute contribution se rattachant à l'informatique ubiquitaire et mobile dans les disciplines citées ci-avant sera d'intérêt pour ces journées. Sans se limiter à cette liste, les thèmes considérés pourront concerner :

* Architectures et intergiciels pour les environnements pervasifs et/ou mobiles
* Méthodes et outils de conception, développement et déploiement d'applications pervasives et/ou mobiles
* Interaction homme-machine en environnements pervasifs et/ou sur supports mobiles

Les soumissions peuvent prendre plusieurs formes :

- Les présentations orales pour présenter des travaux de recherche ou de recherche et développement récents, pas forcément aboutis, ou un état de l'art consacré à un thème particulier.

- Les démonstrations ont pour objectif de permettre aux participants de la conférence de découvrir un système particulier à travers une vidéo ou en interagissant eux-mêmes avec celui-ci.

- Les sessions thématiques ont pour objectif de regrouper autour d'un thème commun les travaux de plusieurs équipes, le thème pouvant être scientifique ou applicatif. Ces sessions pourront regrouper des présentations ou des démonstrations. La gestion de cette session sera déléguée à la personne responsable de la session.

Les propositions de présentation, démonstration ou session thématique pourront être rédigées en Français ou en Anglais, elle devront être rédigées sur une à quatre pages en suivant le format de présentation des SIG ACM disponible sur http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Un résumé en français et en anglais devront être fournis.

We recently opened a postdoc position, available ASAP.

Additionally to this postdoc announcement, please note that there will be a "social networks, mobility" tenured position for a junior researcher to be recruited in 2010 at CNRS (ref. 42/04). cf. the CNRS website.

Here's the topic of the postdoc :

Many users travel daily with computing devices possessing both communication and geographical positioning peripherals, e.g., portable WiFi telephones equipped with GPS. These devices, connected together, potentially constitute a large distributed system with a very dynamic topology. Information about mobility, such as the positioning of nodes and their movement, is an essential characteristic of any realistic approach for ubiquitous systems.

The ARUM project aims to place the mobility concept at the center of distributed algorithms for resilient ubiquitous systems via the exploration of the relationship between the computational and physical aspects of failure-prone mobile systems. Both practical and theoretical aspects are to be considered, based on the collection and exploitation of mobility and failure data captured on mobile phones. The analysis of the collected data should enable the definition of realistic mobility and failure models. These models will be used for the validation of mobile services: (a) by experimentation on a platform composed of real mobile nodes (cf. the blog) and (b) by simulation.

From a practical viewpoint, the data collection campaign will be started early 2010 and will be based on portable telephones equipped with GPS (Nokia 5800 smart-phones). A prototype application was developed and the actual deployed software is to be finalized. The post-doc will thus: 1) maintain and evolve this software, 2) deploy and manage the experiments, 3) collect and sanitize the collected data, 4) analyze the data and develop appropriate models.

The gross salary will be 30k€ per year (2040 € per month after mandatory health and social insurance), the position is available for up to 2 years.

Big demo day

On the 17th of March 2009, we had a big demonstration of the distributed blackbox testbed of the Hidenets project. It is a avionics-like blackbox running on top of a partial Hidenets architecture with the following blocks: Proximity Map, Trust and Cooperation Oracle, Cooperative data backup. The demos were successful and shot on film. We are currently editing a movie but just to show off, here's a preliminary shoot.

Reduced Range Wifi Experiments

We are currently testing the validity of the reduced range wifi interfaces.

The setup is composed of two vehicles: one is fixed and acts as a server, and another one is moving along a line, stopping at each cross to measure connectivity and throughput.

This process is repeated using different attenuation values.

Improved rover

We improved the rover with 6 infrared sensors now, it is much better, have a look :

As you can see the rover is now able to increase its speed (black symbol on right) decrease it (black/left) make a small pause (white/left) or a long pause (white/right).

3D Exploration

At some stage, it appeared that some applications we could envision would require three dimensional mobility: space/sea exploration, human-body navigation, etc.

Even though this is too much in advance, we found some robots (and here) that we could use in such settings.

Resume@Ubicomp2007

I am currently in Innsbruck, in Tyrol, for the Ubicomp'2007 conference. The place is nice, especially the old town and the Alps surrounding the city.

Yesterday I presented our paper entitled "Experimental Evaluation of Resilience for Ubiquitous Mobile Systems". I must say that I received a very good feedback even though I was no very satisfied with my presentation.

We decided, Aaron Quigley, Steve Neely, Lorcan Coyle and myself, to try to go for a Ulysses cooperation. The basic idea is that we would come to their lab in UCD and help them setting up a few robots and they would come to LAAS in order to measure the Crickets accuracy (and possibly compare it with Ubisense, and improve it).

Update: the project proposal has been submitted and we keep the fingers crossed while waiting for the evaluation.

Nanobot pictures

One of the applications we are building the platform for is nano-robots. We envision an army of nanobots that one should inject into the human body to perform a given task, such as to deliver a given amount of medicine in a particular region, or killing such virus, etc.

I was looking for images of nanobots to illustrate the talk I will give on sunday at the Ubiquitous Systems Evaluation workshop about Resume and I found the fantastic work of Tim Fonseca at the Nanotech Art Gallery.
